Best animal attractions at Chester Zoo

The Chester Zoo in Chester is one of the most prestigious zoos in the UK and a significant attraction known for its impressive animal collection and commitment to conservation. Located in the historic city of Chester in northwest England, the zoo covers an area of approximately 51 hectares and is home to over 35,000 animals from more than 500 species. Since its founding in 1931, Chester Zoo has become one of the largest and most visited zoos in the country, combining education, research, and family fun in a unique way. It is considered a pioneer in modern zoo design, setting standards for animal welfare and the preservation of endangered species.

Family friendly activities at the zoo

The zoo was founded by George Mottershead, a visionary animal lover inspired by a visit to Manchester Zoo. Mottershead dreamed of creating a zoo without cages, where animals could live in as natural environments as possible. This philosophy continues to shape Chester Zoo to this day: instead of cramped cages, there are spacious enclosures that replicate the animals' natural habitats, from African savannas to Asian rainforests to tropical islands. This design allows visitors to observe the animals in an environment that closely resembles their wild home, while promoting the well-being of the inhabitants.

Conservation projects at Chester Zoo

A highlight of Chester Zoo is the "Islands" project, one of the park's most innovative attractions. This area, opened in 2015, takes visitors on a journey through Southeast Asia. In six themed zones representing islands like Sumatra, Bali, and Sulawesi, animals such as Sumatran tigers, orangutans, and Sunda gharials live. The design includes dense vegetation, waterways, and even a boat ride called the "Lazy River" that passes through the enclosures. This immersive experience not only gives the impression of an expedition, but also raises awareness for the protection of these endangered habitats.

Historical attractions in Chester

In addition to "Islands," the zoo offers a variety of other attractions. The Elephant House is home to a herd of Asian elephants and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, while the "Realm of the Red Ape" showcases orangutans and gibbons in a lush, tree-filled environment. The "Spirit of the Jaguar" is dedicated to South American big cats, and the "Butterfly Journey" greenhouse allows visitors to wander among freely fluttering butterflies. For children, there is "Madagascar Playground," an adventure playground that offers fun and exercise amidst nature. The diversity of enclosures ensures that every corner of the zoo holds new discoveries.

Animal watching at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo is not only a place of entertainment, but also an internationally recognized center for conservation and research. It participates in breeding programs for endangered species such as the black-footed ferret, mountain gorilla, and Amur leopard, and collaborates with organizations worldwide to protect habitats. Zoo scientists conduct studies that contribute to biodiversity conservation, and the park supports projects in countries like Uganda and India. These efforts make the visit an opportunity to learn more about wildlife conservation.

The facility itself is expansive and interspersed with well-maintained gardens that make walking between enclosures enjoyable. There are numerous paths that lead through blooming beds and shady tree groves, as well as picnic areas for picnics or breaks. Seasonal events, such as lantern parades in winter or educational programs in summer, add extra charm to the zoo and make it attractive year-round. For families, there are interactive stations and tours that impart knowledge about the animals and their habitats.

Very expensive and for what? We barely seen any animals. Walked for 5 hours straight just to see some sleepy lion, hiding jaguar, 2 elephants and 2 zebras from the distance oh and some goats and ducks. Mostly bushes and trees around. 40% of it had a "no one home" sign, some places were closed including the free fly birds(parrots) , if u don't even have animals to begin with atleast do it right and don't charge people the full price. Very disappointed as we spend almost whole day there ripped our wallet off and for nothing..

Great zoo, clean and easy to navigate around making sure you see all the animals. Long wait for coffee at the jaguar house, not the best service nit other than that a great day out

We attended the zoo on a Friday afternoon (today). I had timed the trip so we were able to see said animals in the time frame I’d given us for our experience. However the experience was cut short (precisely 40 minutes) as the staff lure all the animals into their night time houses out of sight. Presumably they do this so that they can go home on time. By 4pm, the elephants were inside rather than being in what is supposed to be their natural habitat. We had missed several other species due to this too. It cut 40 minutes of our trip. I had paid for the full experience and the closing time of 4:30pm which is clearly stated on the website. Perhaps change this to 3:30pm to ensure your paying customers aren’t left disappointed and disgusting like I was today. There were activities unopened or half opened (ie. Face painting, restaurants and rides). It seems that if you are a weekend guest then only then you get all of this. So not visit this zoo in the week. And go in the morning, with your own pack lunch rather than at lunch time.

We are members at Chester Zoo so of course we like it. Ever changing so there’s always something new to investigate. We always eat afterwards at The Wheatsheaf on Heath Road in Upton. I have reviewed The Wheatsheaf separately in the past but I would recommend you put it into Google Maps and have an enhanced day like we do.
